Ash Ireland Calls For 60c Increase On Cigarettes
An anti-smoking group is calling for a 60 cent increase in the price of a packet of cigarettes in December's budget.
900,000 smokers in the country smoke 6 billion cigarettes a year, according to Ash Ireland.
The group says an increase in the price is the best weapon in the fight against the habit.
It says 5,700 people die of tobacco related illnesses every year.

An Irish Cancer charity will ask the Government to increase the price of cigarettes by €2 in the upcoming Budget, according to a statement today. The Irish Cancer Society will present its pre-budget proposal to TDs and Senators on Wednesday evening, and will recommend the huge price hike to ward off young smokers.

The Irish Farmers' Association is today staging a protest at a Co Kildare retail distribution centre to demand a significant and immediate beef price increase. The organisation believes prices should be brought in line at least with the Bord Bia European Export Benchmark Price Index.

EU Court Says Minimum Cigarette Price Unlawful
The Court of Justice of the European Union has found Ireland's legislation on minimum price fixing for cigarettes contravenes EU law. The court found that similar laws in Austria and France were also in violation of a European Directive, which has rules on excise duty affecting the consumption of tobacco products.

Forty cents is to be added to a packet of cigarettes, alongside a pro-rata increase on other tobacco products, it has been revealed in the government's new Budget. A packet of 20 cigarettes will now cost close to €10. A pro-rata increase on other tobacco products will see 20 cents added to the cost of a 25g pouch of roll your own tobacco.

Govt Urged To Increase Funding For Domestic Violence Support Services
The government has been urged to substantially increase funding for domestic violence accommodation support services. Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson on Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoin Ó Broin, made the call following a response from Minister Katherine Zappone to a parliamentary question which showed that Tusla only received €15.
