President Higgins Congratulates Obama

President Michael D Higgins has congratulated Barack Obama on the success on his re-election.

He said that he assured him "continued goodwill and best wishes of the people of Ireland".

In a letter to Mr Obama, President Higgins said: "The international community faces many daunting challenges and we look forward to your continued leadership and constructive engagement in the period ahead.



"The very close and warm relationship between Ireland and the United States has, with your help and encouragement, prospered during your tenure.

"I am confident that, under your leadership, our bilateral relations will be further advanced during the next four years."

Election 2016 To Take Place On 26 February
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has confirmed the election will take place on 26 February. Writing on Twitter, he said: "I am seeking a dissolution of Dáil Éireann today with the election to be held on February 26th." Mr Kenny and President Higgins signed the papers just after 10.30am on Wednesday. Polling stations will open 23 days from today, 03 February.

President Obama Arrives In Ireland
U.S President Barack Obama has now arrived in Ireland. Air Force One touched down in Dublin airport earlier this morning with the President, and his wife Michelle, greeted by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and the US Ambassador to Ireland, Dan Rooney.

U.S President Barack Obama is due to touch down in Ireland next week. On Monday, the President, the First Lady and Taoiseach Enda Kenny will take part in a public celebration at College Green in Dublin. The US President will address the audience after entertainment from many well known Irish artists.
