Man Charged With Aoife Phelan Murder

A 24 year old man charged with the murder of Aoife Phelan is to receive psychiatric treatment behind bars.

Robert Corbet, with an address of Sheffield, Portlaoise, was charged with killing the nanny on 25th October.

Mr Corbet has been remanded in custody and is to appear at the district court in Portlaoise on 15th November.

He is to receive psychiatric attention in Cloverhill Prison.

An application for free legal aid has been deferred until next week.

A lorry driver accused of the murder of Aoife Phelan in Co Laois last month has been granted free legal aid after a court heard that his haulage business is being wound up. 24-year-old Robert Corbet, of Sheffield Cross, Timahoe Road, Portlaoise, Co Laois had shook his head and said “no” when he was charged last week.

On-Duty Firefighter Arrested On Suspicion Of Drink Driving
A fireman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving while on duty behind the wheel of a fire engine. The man was driving a fire truck on the Callan Road, Kilkenny over the weekend and approached a checkpoint. It is believed he was returning from an emergency incident and failed a breath test. He was issued a fixed charged penalty notice.

The Michaela McAreavey murder trial heard today that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to compression of the neck The chief police medical officer in Mauritius was giving evidence in the Supreme Court this morning.
