Two Die In Small Aircraft Crash

Two men have died in a small aircraft crash near Birr in Co Offaly on Sunday evening.

It is understood the small plane had taken off from the airfield at Birr where the Ormond flying club is based. It was flying south when it went down just before 5pm south of the village of Crinkle at an area known as Ballyegan.

There were two men on board, an instructor in his 30s and a student in his 20s.

The alarm was raised immediately and a search for the aircraft got under way.

Gardaí brought in air support units and located the plane in heavy undergrowth.

Garda and air accident investigations are now under way.

Two Cork Plane Crash Victims Buried
The funerals of two of the Northern Ireland victims of the Cork air crash are due to be held later today. Pat Cullinan, a 45-year-old senior partner with the international accountancy firm KPMG, is to be buried after requiem mass in St Patrick's Church in the village of Cranagh near Plumbridge in Co Tyrone.

Air Corps Crash Deaths Probed
Two pilots have been killed during an air accident in the west of Ireland last night. Two separate investigations are under way this morning into the collision, which resulted in the deaths of two Air Corps pilots during a training flight The two men flying the aircraft crashed near the village of Cornamona in Connemara in poor weather conditions.

Cork Plane Crash Report Reveals Problem With A Sensor
A report from the Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) has revealed last year's fatal plane crash at Cork Airport identified a problem with a sensor. The crash, which claimed the lives of six people, found a "mismatch in the torque being delivered from each of the two engines".
