Nun Faces 63 Indecent Assault Charges
A 62-year-old nun is on trial at Sligo Circuit Court charged with indecently assaulting pupils at a national school in the midlands in the 1970s.
Sr Mary Theresa Grogan, formerly known as Sr Peter, has pleaded not guilty to 63 charges of indecently assaulting seven young girls, mostly in a classroom in the school between 1973 and 1977.
The court was told by the prosecution that the abuse was systematic, all the alleged victims were the same age, they were third class pupils.
It heard that the assaults were repetitive and similar with the girls being called up to the nun's desk when it was time to correct homework.
Sr Grogan spent time in the missions in Africa but when she returned a number of years ago, one of the alleged victims made a complaint to gardaí who began an investigation.
The trial before Judge Donagh McDonagh is expected to continue for two to three weeks.

Nun Indecent Assault Case Adjourned
The trial of a nun charged with 63 counts of indecent assault against seven of her former pupils has been adjourned until Tuesday, following legal discussions yesterday. 62-year-old Sr Mary Theresa Grogan, also known as Sr Peter, has denied all charges against her.

Brother Thomas McCarry, with an address at Clareville, Finglas Road, Glasnevin faces charges relating to two separate boys at the CBS primary school in Mullingar 1984 and 1985.

A former school principal has denied 13 charges of sexual abuse between September 1977 and June 1980. During the second day of the trial yesterday however the claimant has denied that he withheld details of a financial claim against the former principal from gardaí.
