Two Investigations Underway Following Death Of Worker

Two investigations have been launched following the death of a man at the ESB Lough Ree power station in Co Longford.

It is believed the man, in his late 50s, became trapped in machinery shortly before 1am.

Emergency services were called to the scene and colleagues made frantic efforts to release him.

It is not yet known if weather conditions played a part in the accident.

Over 20 Bord na Móna workers are involved in the peat delivery division at the plant near Lanesborough.

There was heavy rain and strong winds in the area last night where Bord na Móna trains unload peat for delivery to the peat-burning power station.

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority have begun separate investigations into the circumstance surrounding the accident.
