Govt To Act On Expert Review Group Findings By Christmas
Senator O'Keeffe has today welcomed the Government commitment to act on the findings of the Expert Review Group by Christmas.
The Report on the Judgment in A, B and C, Ireland was published yesterday and outlined a series of options which will enable the Government to implement the judgement of the Supreme Court in the X case in 1992.
She said: "I would like to thank the Expert Group for the clear and comprehensive report which they have delivered. It will form the basis for a strong debate in the Houses of the Oireachtas and help to clarify the many constitutional, ethical and legal matters which are raised by the original X case.
"The Report makes clear that the X case is "the law of the state, as declared by its highest court. It is binding on all lower courts and generally.
"I believe that we must move to passing legislation, accompanied by guidelines - as recommended by the Expert Group. I believe that the legislation should be a matter of urgency - but not of speed. It is important to prioritise it. It is equally important that due care is given to getting the legislation right."
