Disappointing Performance From Irish Students On PISA Maths Test
As part of PISA 2012 in Ireland, a nationally representative sample of mathematics teachers took part in a survey in March 2012.
A report on the survey was published today by the Educational Research Centre (ERC),
St Patrick's College, Drumcondra.
The survey gathered information about the implementation of Project Maths against a backdrop of somewhat disappointing performance of Irish students on the PISA mathematics test in previous cycles of PISA.
Project Maths, a major curriculum reform initiative, was first implemented in a small group of 24 'initial' schools, and subsequently rolled out, on a phased basis, to all post-primary schools. First examination of the completely revised mathematics syllabi will take place at Leaving Certificate level in June 2014, and at Junior Certificate level in June 2015.
To date, there has not been much research published on Project Maths. This report, along with reports on research undertaken by the NCCA, the NFER (UK) and the University of Limerick, are being launched today at the Marino Institute in Dublin.
