Dunnes Stores Pay €21m Debt

Dunnes Stores has paid €21.6m debt in full and a petition to wind up stores has been withdrawn by the Commercial Court.

Brian O'Moore SC for Dunnes Stores said that there reasons for not making the payment were genuinely held and no discourtesy to the was intended.

Holtglen Ltd took legal action to try to enforce a judgement order against the chain over money owed for building work on the Ferrybank Shopping Centre.

Holtglen is now insolvent and Nama are dealing with its debts.

Call For Dunnes Stores Strikers To Attend Funeral Of Nelson Mandela
The Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Brendan Smith TD has called on the Government to make arrangements for representatives of the Dunnes Stores strikers to attend the funeral of Nelson Mandela. Deputy Smith commented: "The 12 Dunnes Stores workers who stood up against apartheid clearly had a special place in Nelson Mandela's heart.

FF Publishes Bill To Regulate Debt Collectors
Fianna Fáil has published a Bill to regulate debt collectors and stamp out criminal practices in the sector. The proposals, introduced by the party's Justice Spokesperson Niall Collins, include the establishment of an open register of debt collectors, a code of conduct for all operators and a ban on people with violent criminal convictions.

FF To Tackle Household Debt
The two-day Fianna Fail (FF) strategy meeting continues today with the party leader promising to address household debt. In the new Dail term the party has said they will make a move on creating legislation and a statutory body that will renegotiate household debt for families who are overwhelmed by repayments.

Dunne Could Run In European Elections
Irish entrepreneur Ben Dunne has said he could run as an independent candidate in next years European Parliament elections. Mr Dunne claims he will put himself forward for the elections if there is a second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty before then.

Ibec Slams Proposals By The Low Pay Commission
Ibec has slammed plans by the Low Pay Commission for a 50c increase in the national minimum wage. The group, which represents Irish business, said the case is at odds with all the economic evidence. It also said the increase would heap pressure on companies still struggling to stay in business.
