Man Jailed Over Dundalk Teenager Attack

A man has been jailed for 16 years for killing a teenager in Dundalk two years ago.

37-year-old father of for Douglas Ward, of Loughantarve, Knockbridge, Co Louth, admitted manslaughter.

18-year-old Niall Dorr was killed when he tried to break up a row involving Mr Ward.

Ward then attacked Mr Dorr, kicking him in the head.

Mr Justice Paul Carney said the kick to the head was an aggravating factor in the death of Mr Dorr.

The incident occurred when Mr Dorr was with two friends on Castle Road in Dundalk on 13 October 2011.

A group including Mr Ward approached them at around 21:00, and a row subsequently broke out.

Mr Dorr was a champion kickboxer, and attempted to stop the row when Mr Ward attacked him, repeatedly punching and kicking him in the head.

He ripped the teenager’s shirt off and continued to attack him even when he was unresponsive.

Zigzag shoe marks were left on the teenager’s forehead and the side of his head. The victim sustained irrevocable brain damage.

Ward had been in Dundalk for a bail hearing at the time.

It was found he had been drinking since the pubs opened that morning.

Following the attack on Mr Dorr, Mr Ward reportedly went to an off-licence to buy more drink.
