Church Sympathy For Rape Victims Not Credible - Labour
Labour TD for Dublin Bay North, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, has stated that the Catholic Church cannot credibly say that it has sympathy and compassion for those pregnant as a result of rape, while it still has not paid the state the €380 million it owes to help compensate victims of child rape, sexual assault and physical abuse.
He said: "At the Oireachtas Health Committee hearings into the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights in the ABC case, Bishop Christopher Jones and Fr Tim Barlett both stated that in the case of a pregnancy caused through rape, agents of the Church would first and foremost show the utmost compassion for those who find themselves in that tragic situation. Bishop Jones also stated that rapists should be brought to justice.
"The Catholic Church has absolutely no credibility in this regard, given that approximately €380 million is still owed to the State as part of the agreement reached with the Irish government in 2002. This money is required to compensate the victims of rape and sexual assault, which the Catholic Church now states it has sympathy and compassion for."

Twelve Years For Rape On Church Grounds
A man has been jailed for 12 years after repeatedly raping a married Polish woman in the grounds of a west Dublin church. Richard Finn aged 20, subjected the woman to over two hours of rape and sexual assaults on July 22, 2007 during which he used his mobile phone to photograph her. The phone was never recovered.

Tusla Cuts Funding To Catholic Church Marriage Preparation Course
Tusla, the statutory child and family agency, will no longer fund a marriage preparation course run by the Catholic Church. Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Tusla Chief Executive Gordon Jeyes said that the agency needed to "live within its means when cuts were being made".

Catholic Church Child Safety Watchdog Publish Latest Report
The latest report by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC), reviewing four diocese and five church entities, has been published. The reviews look at how complaints to the church were dealt with, and to date a total of 26 Dioceses and 11 Religious Congregations/Missionary Societies have undergone review.

Former President Criticises Catholic Church For View On Homosexuality
The Catholic Church is becoming increasingly isolated in its view on homosexuality, former President Mary McAleese has said. Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Mrs McAleese said she was concerned at the growing number of young men, and in particular young gay men, who take their own lives in Ireland.

Catholic Church 'Not Planning' To Introduce Lay Services
The Catholic Church has denied reports it is planning to extend lay services to Sundays. Although the church hierarchy admitted there is a lack of people going into the priesthood, bishops said they had no plans for lay-led Sunday services.
