€420m To Be Saved By The Health Service By 2016

A further €420m in health service savings are hoped to be made over the next three years.

The government announced the savings plan during the latest round of talks on an extension to the Croke Park agreement.

At the meeting trade unions heard that the savings for 2013 would be €150m.

The €420 million saving represent what is expected of the health service towards reducing the State’s pay and pensions bill by €1 billion by 2015.

Unions also heard that there would be a net reduction of 2,400 posts in the health service in 2013.

Further discussion will take place throughout Thursday between the government and trade unions hoping to reach an agreement on an extension of the Croke Park deal.

Unions Split In Croke Park II Extension Vote
The Croke park II agreement has been accepted by the Prison Officers' Association (POA), who voted yes with a majority of 28%. The POA had recommended acceptance. The vote resulted in 64% for and 36% against. Meanwhile, SIPTU has voted to reject the proposed extension by a margin of 53.7% against 46.3% in favour.

A decision by the government to remove €12 million from the mental health budget has been condemned by Sinn Féin's TD, Dessie Ellis.
