High Court Order Blood Samples To Be taken From Teenage Girl
The High Court has order that blood be taken from a psychiatrically ill teenager, despite her personal objections.
The 15-year-old girl had told doctors she wanted to take her own life before her 16th birthday.
Doctors want to take samples to establish if the teenager has a life-threatening physical disorder known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) and to ensure a drug being administered is not causing her to develop diabetes.
The girl, who cannot be named by court order, has bipolar affective disorder and was detained last October in an adolescent mental health inpatient unit under the Mental Health Act 2001.
The girl opposed the taking of blood samples but doctors considered them necessary to monitor her reaction to her medication, a mood-altering drug, olanzapine, which, the judge noted, is known to be associated with a possible risk of developing diabetes. The girl’s parents also supported taking the samples.
