Redundancy Plans To Be Discuss By Cabinet

Plans for the first targeted voluntary redundancy in the public sector are to be discussed by the Cabinet, Brendan Howlin has confirmed.

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform said the first tranche of employees identified as appropriate candidates for the scheme include a large number of Health Service Executive staff.

It is understood that workers in the Department of Agriculture and some of those working in the education sector were also considered.

"Late last year I asked every line minister to look across all employees in their department and agencies under their remit to see if there are surplus staff,” Mr Howlin said as arrived at Government Buildings according to RTÉ.

Adding: "Under the Croke Park Agreement we want to redeploy people to fill gaps arising from non-filling and non-recruitment, but where there are people who can't be deployed we can offer them a voluntary package to go."
