Construction Worker Given 8 Years For Attempted Rape

A 32-year-old Lithuanian construction worker has been sentenced to 8-years in jail, with the last nine months suspended, for the assault and attempted rape of a 19-year-old student.

Arunas Cervinskas attacked the girl as she made her way home alone.

He was tracked down by his mobile phone number as just before the attack the girl had given him her number and he had called her mobile to make sure she had given him the right number.

In the attack, which happened on May 18 2006, the girl suffered a broken nose, fractured jaw and shattered eye socket.

There was also significant bruising to her head, neck and chest and a cut which required stitching.

Cervinskas trial had originally begun in December and ran for a number of days before the accused entered his guilty plea.

UK Police Believe Missing Girl Could Be In Ireland
Police in the UK have said that they think an 11-year-old girl missing in London could be in Ireland. According to the Metropolitan Police Kathleen Doherty disappeared from Greenford, London, along with her 14-year-old sister Biddy Doherty.

Three Arrested Over Cork Murder Released
Three men who were arrested as part of a Gardaí investigation into the murder of Mikolaj Wilk in Cork have been released. The trio were detained on the morning of Tuesday 22 January in Ballincollig following a number of searches in the area, but have since been released without charge.
