Teen Asks For Longer Jail Term To Do Leaving Cert

A judge has detained a 16-year-old Dublin boy who wanted to be locked up so he could do the Leaving Certificate.

At the city’s juvenile court on Thursday Judge Aingeal Ní Chondúin heard that despite a six month suspended sentence given to the boy in November, he had continued to commit petty thefts, had breached the peace and had been caught carrying bolt cutters for use in a theft.

Defence solicitor Brendan Aherne is understood to have explained that the boy wanted to do the Leaving Certificate and actually wanted a jail term imposed in order to do so.

The judge activated the boy’s previous six-month suspended sentence, however the teenager then asked for more time in custody.

A further 10-month consecutive term was added for other offences, resulting in a 16-month sentence.

“I hope you do well,” the Irish Times reported the judge as saying.
