Garda Killed By Armed Raiders

A garda officer was shot and killed by raiders waiting to rob the Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan, Jenkinstown, near Dundalk.

He has been named as Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe who was attached to the Detective Unit in Dundalk.

It is believed four armed men were waiting outside to rob the credit union and moved to hold up staff at gunpoint as they were leaving work.

Detective Garda Donohoe, who was one of two detectives on escort duty, approached the raiders and was shot.

The 2nd officer is thought to have been severely traumatised but is otherwise unhurt.

The gang stole €4,000 in cash before escaping from the scene.

It is believed that the raiders knew the credit union money was being escorted by gardaí.

While gardaí have not ruled anything out at this stage they suspect that a cross-border gang was involved in the robbery and murder, and that gang operates in the north Louth-south Armagh area.
