45-Year-Old Sentenced To 10 Years For Abusing Cousin
A Galway man has been sentenced to a partially suspended 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to repeatedly raping his younger cousin when he was a teenager.
The 45-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court, to one count of rape and six counts of indecent assault in Co Galway on dates between January 1982 and April 1987.
The court heard that a regular and sustained level of abuse went on three times a week when the victim was aged between six and 11 years old and the accused man was aged from 15-19.
It is understood the abuse escalated from him touching her outside her clothes to indecent assault to rape and oral rape by the time the victim was 11.
Mr Justice Paul Carney suspended the final 2½ years of the sentence after taking a number of mitigating factors into consideration.
These included the man’s early guilty plea, his remorse and his age at the time.
The judge also ordered the man to keep away from his cousin for the rest of his life.

A Wexford farm labourer has been jailed for 10 years for raping a schoolgirl on several separate occasions. The 29-year-old man - who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity - pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to six sample counts of raping the then nine to 12-year-old girl between 1997 and 1999.

Deaf Woman Attacked By Friend's Partner
A man has been convicted of raping his partner's deaf friend on New Year's Eve. The 33-year-old man, who is also deaf, pleaded not guilty to assaulting the 43 year-old woman. Judge Frank O'Donnell remanded the man in custody until sentencing. His identity has been withheld to protect that of his victims.
