BID Launch Campaign To End Street Begging

A Dublin business group have launched a campaign to reduce the "serious problem" of active street begging.

The Dublin City Business Improvement District (BID) claim active street begging creates a perception that the city is unsafe, which impacts negatively on tourism and businesses.

The campaign, 'Change for the Better' is a “diverted giving” scheme.

People will be urged to stop giving money to individuals begging on the street and to instead donate to one of 40 charity boxes in shops and businesses around the city.

These funds will then go to addiction charity Tiglin.

BID and a number of the businesses supporting the campaign have offered to match the donations made by the public through the boxes.

Research conducted by Dublin City Council last year showed that feeling unsafe was one of the most significant factors to impact negatively on people's experience of the city centre.
