Average Age Of Bride And Groom Continues To Rise
The average age of grooms in 2010 was 34.1 years, 0.1 years more than the average age in 2009, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
In the past fifty years, the average age of grooms has decreased from 30.9 years in 1960 to a low of 26.2 years in 1977 and has increased to a high of 34.1 years in 2010.
A similar trend is evident for brides with the average age decreasing from 27.1 in 1960 to 24.0 in 1977 and has increased to a high of 32.0 in 2010.
The number of marriages registered in 2010 was 20,594, which equates to a crude marriage rate of 4.5 per 1,000 of the population. This compares with a total of 21,627 marriages and a marriage rate of 4.8 per thousand of the population in 2009.
Of the 20,594 marriages registered in 2010, there were 13,781 Roman Catholic marriage ceremonies (67%), 5,991 civil marriages (29%), 427 Church of Ireland ceremonies (2%) and the remaining 2% was made up of Presbyterian, Methodist, Jewish and other ceremonies.

Ireland Has The Highest EU Birth Rate
Ireland has the highest birth rate of any of the 27 EU countries, according to a report by the ESRI. The perinatal statistics show that 75,600 births were notified to the NPRS in 2010, compared to 58,261 births on 2001. Almost 28% of women giving birth were aged 35 years or older, up from 22% for this age group in 2001.

Sham Marriage Arrests Accelerate
A top Garda chief has revealed some 16 people have been arrested so far this year for involvement in bogus marriages. Chief Supt John O'Driscoll of the Garda National Immigration Bureau said there were concerns over an increased number of "sham marriages" taking place in Ireland between European citizens and their non-EU spouses.

325 Million Year-Old Amphibian Bones Found In Clare
The bones of an amphibian-like creature that scurried the shores of Co Clare 325 million years ago have been discovered. The two small fossilised bones were recovered from a beach at Doolin. Researchers Dr Eamon Doyle and Dr Aodhán Ó Gogáin published their findings in the Irish Journal of Earth Sciences.
