ECRI Call For Ban On Racial Profiling

The Government should consider banning any form of racial profiling by gardaí, a human rights body has said.

A new report, produced by the European Commission of Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), highlights that Travellers still face a significant challenge in accessing accommodation in Ireland.

Adding that local authorities should face binding requirements to provide them with adequate accommodation.

A 47-member organisation, the ECRI praised the Equality Tribunal and Equality Authority, which protects employees against discrimination in the work place.

However, it went on to raise a number of concerns over racial profiling. Saying this is against the High Court who declared as unconstitutional rules requiring non-nationals to show identity papers on demand.

It is the fourth assessment by the Strasbourg-based commission, which is part of the Council of Europe.
