Sports Minister Stands Firm On Drinks Sponsorship

Drinks sponsorship of sporting events are to remain, as Sports Minister Leo Varadker insists a ban would have no effect on underage drinking.

Labour junior health minister Alex White is pushing for tighter constraints on alcohol sponsorship.

Buy Mr Varadker is standing firm saying there is "no evidence to show that a ban on sponsorship would be effective in terms of reducing alcohol consumption amongst youths".

The minister added that I France binge drinking among teenagers is actually despite strict advertising bans.

Mr Varadkar was responding to a number of Dail questions tabled on the issue, and cited new research used by his department to say "there is no evidence to show that a ban on sponsorship would be effective in terms of reducing alcohol consumption amongst youths".

Minister Pledges To End Alcohol Sponsorship Of Sports
The Minister of State for Health, Róisín Shortall, has pledged to end alcohol sponsorship of sports events. “I am committed to phasing that out over a reasonable period of time,” she said in the Dáil. There is “no room for ambivalence in our approach”.

Safefood Urges Parents To Choose Water Instead Of Juice Drinks
As part of a campaign to take on childhood obesity, safefood is urging parents to choose water instead of juice drinks as they announced results of a label survey into the sugar levels of a wide selection of popular drinks for children. Many of the drinks that safefood compared contained as much sugar as 'fizzy drinks'.

Former GAA President Says 'No Evidence' To Back Drinks Ad Ban
There is no scientific evidence to show that a ban on drinks sponsorship in sport will be beneficial, former GAA president Sean Kelly has said. Kelly, a Fine Gael MEP, told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that the proposed ban is based on opinion rather than scientific evidence, adding that a ban would have a negative effect on sport in the long term.
