Unemployment Falls For First Time Since 2008
The number of people in employment rose by 1,200 in 2012, the first increase since 2008.
The Central Statistics Office’s (CSO) Quarterly National Household Survey for the fourth quarter of 2012 reveals a decrease in unemployment of 19,200.
18,000 people leaving the labour market account for the majority of this figure.
While today's figures show employment growth, the CSO cautions that it is a very small positive figure.

Number Of Foreign Nationals Working Drops
24.1% of foreign nationals assigned PPS numbers in 2007 were employed five years later in 2012. The figure comes from an annual analysis of the Revenue Commissioners, the Department of Social Protection and the Central Statistics Office, based on foreign nationals who were allocated PPS numbers during the 10-year period 2002-2012.

Sinn Féin Call On Govt To Offer Free Schoolbooks Scheme
The government have been urged to create a free schoolbook loan scheme in an effort to ease the financial burden on families preparing for their children's return to school. Sinn Féin’s finance spokesperson, Pearse Doherty TD, made the call saying that it was time the government "recognised the hardship that buying schoolbooks is causing.

The powers of the Ombudsman’s office have been extended to allow her carry out independent investigations into new areas and agencies, including the third level sector. Emily O’Reilly said today her office had lobbied for “decades” to have certain bodies brought within its remit.

Under planned new legislation published today the Health Service Executive will cease to be in 2014. The Health Service Executive Governance Bill 2012 provides for a Director General and six Directorates, covering areas such as hospitals, primary care and public health.

CSO Figures Reveal Over 400 Civil Partnerships In 2012
New figures from the Central Statistics Office have revealed that there were 429 civil partnerships in 2012, 263 of which involving men and 166 involving women. The figures also breakdown the areas in which the people live – some 69% live in Leinster and 34% live in Dublin city.
