24-Year-Old Jailed For Burglaries At Homes Of Elderly

A man has been convicted over the burglaries at them homes of two elderly people, including the mayor of Ballinasloe.

24-year-old Niall Lynch, of Aonach, Ballinasloe, pleaded guilty before Galway Circuit Criminal Court to burglary at the home of an 80-year-old man on July 28 and to seriously assaulting the man and threatening him with a knife.

On the second charge he pleaded guilty to burglary, while on High Court bail, at the home of mayor of Ballinasloe Carmel Grealy, 68, on September 15.

He also admitted assaulting her and having a hammer in his possession.

Judge Rory McCabe sentenced Lynch to four years in prison for both burglaries to run consecutively, suspending the final three years for three years on condition that on his release, Lynch continue to receive addiction treatment and counselling.

Man Charged In Connection With Spate Of Burglaries In Co Offaly
A 28-year-old man has been charged in connection with a spate of burglaries in Co Offaly. The incidents happened in the Birr area between 9am and 10am on Monday. The suspect is expected to appear at Portlaoise District Court on Tuesday. As part of Operation Thor, gardaí arrested the man near the scene of an aggravated burglary.
