Former Cllr Receives Suspended Sentence
A former Fianna Fail councillor has been given a six month suspended sentence and fined €800 for being drunk, dangerous and carrying a knife.
Gary O'Flynn, Of Hayfield Drive, Castle Court, had pleaded not guilty to all of the charges but was convicted in February.
Judge Olann Kelleher said the message had to go out that people who carry knives can expect a prison sentence.
However, because O'Flynn had no previous convictions and was a man of good character he sentenced him to six months, suspended for two years.
The charges occurred after an incident at Gorby's Nightclub in 2011.
Niall Carney, the owner of the club, approached O'Flynn after hearing a complaint that he had thrown at drink over a woman.
Mr Carney said that O'Flynn swore at him and became aggressive.
Gardai who attended the scene said he was also very abusive.
