Not Guilty Plea Over Jill Meagher Murder

At a committal hearing in Australia Adrian Bayley has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Louth woman Jill Meagher.

41-year-old Bayley, of Coburg, pleaded guilty to one count of rape of Ms Meagher, and not guilty to two other charges of rape.

He is accused of grabbing Ms Meagher on a busy Brunswick street and dragging her into a laneway just minutes after she left a bar for the short walk to her home.

The court heard that Mr Bayley strangled Ms Meagher and left her body in the laneway while he went home to get a shovel and his car so he could bury her on the city's outskirts.

The prosecutor said Mr Bayley told police in a lengthy interview that he raped and strangled her and led them to her body.

The hearing continues.
