Seven Year Jail Term For Manslaughter

Maura Thornton has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the manslaughter of her former partner in July 2011.

Thornton, from Inverin in Connemara, was found guilty of stabbing Kevin Joyce 18 times when he appeared uninvited outside her apartment in Salthill, Galway, almost two-years ago.

Despite the victims family asking the court to give Ms Thornton the chance to change her life, Mr Justice Barry White said the killing was a serious offence which, coming before the courts all too frequently.

Ms Thornton had been in a relationship with Mr Joyce but after they broke up, he kept phoning her and arriving uninvited at her apartment.

The final three years of Ms Thornton’s sentence were suspended.

Property Prices Increase In Dublin - CSO
Property prices in Dublin rose by 27% in July, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO). Dublin house prices increased by 2.5% in the month and were 23.1% higher compared to a year earlier. Dublin apartment prices were 26.3% higher when compared with the same month of 2013. The price of properties in the rest of Ireland increased by 1.

37 Year Minimum Term For Offaly Vet Murderer
Clive Sharp has been jailed for life, with a minimum sentence of 37 years, for the murder of Offaly vet Catherine Gowing. A court heard how Ms Gowing had been tied up and raped before being murdered last year. The court heard details of the dismembering of Ms Gowing's body. Ms Gowing was last seen alive on October 12.
