Seven Year Jail Term For Manslaughter

Maura Thornton has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the manslaughter of her former partner in July 2011.

Thornton, from Inverin in Connemara, was found guilty of stabbing Kevin Joyce 18 times when he appeared uninvited outside her apartment in Salthill, Galway, almost two-years ago.

Despite the victims family asking the court to give Ms Thornton the chance to change her life, Mr Justice Barry White said the killing was a serious offence which, coming before the courts all too frequently.

Ms Thornton had been in a relationship with Mr Joyce but after they broke up, he kept phoning her and arriving uninvited at her apartment.

The final three years of Ms Thornton’s sentence were suspended.

Ireland's Largest Theatre Up For Sale
Property company CBRE has put the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on the market with a guide price of €20m. CBRE have been instructed to conduct the sale by receivers, Grant Thornton. The theatre, in Dublin's docklands, is Ireland's largest and opened in 2010 as the Grand Central.

Chance Of Super Prison Contracts Recede
The Irish Jesuit Centre has roundly welcomed an urgent review of plans to build a controversial, huge 'super-prison' for Faith and Justice. It has welcomed the announcement by the new Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, of a review of the proposed super prison at Thornton Hall.

Mental Hospital Move To Prison Rejected
Plans to relocate the Central Mental Hospital to a new prison have been rejected by the opposition, who have been backed by the mental health commission. The motion to co-locate the Central Mental Hospital at the Thorton Hall prison site has been pushed through by government ministers, and has faced outcry from the opposition benches.

Delegates Visit Controversial Mental Hospital Site
Irish political representatives visited the controversial site for the proposed new Central Mental Hospital, in Dublin yesterday. Senators and TDs toured the Thornton Hall site, close to where a new "super prison" is being constructed.
