Garda Ombudsman Investigate Senior Officers Over Gun Licenses
An assistant garda commissioner and a recently retired garda chief superintendent are being investigated by the Garda Ombudsman over their role in dealing with firearms licence applications.
The investigation follows a complaint by a group of shooting enthusiasts that gardai were blocking firearms applications without good cause.
Retired Chief Supt John Manley and Assistant Commissioner Gerry Phillips are the focus of the investigation, according to the Irish Independent.
It is understood that the two investigations relate to a High Court action last year.
In that case, taken against the Department of Justice and An Garda Siochana by shooting enthusiasts, the sportsmen alleged senior gardai were engaged in the blanket refusal of licences for restricted firearms or handguns.
