Call For Minister To Immediately Pay Outstanding DAS Monies
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Agriculture, Éamon Ó Cuív TD, has called for the Minister for Agriculture to immediately ensure the payment of all outstanding Disadvantaged Area Scheme (DAS) monies owed to farmers.
Deputy Ó Cuív has recently been informed that of the 102,090 applications for the DAS, 8,000 have not yet received payment.
"The outstanding payments need to be made in a speedy and efficient manner," said Deputy Ó Cuív.
"It is not acceptable that 8,000 farmers have been waiting since September for their DAS, which many are depending on. The delay has been caused by the retrospective stocking density requirement that was imposed by the Minister last year; it saved virtually no money and managed to add an extra layer of bureaucracy to the scheme for both farmers and the Department.
"In fact, over the last 6 weeks only a further 1,000 farmers have been paid the DAS. If this unnecessary condition had not been imposed, the 8,000 farmers anxiously waiting for payments would have received their payments by now. It is a disgrace that so many farmers have had to wait so long for a payment that forms an integral part of their income. I am urging Minister Coveney to immediately ensure the outstanding payments are processed."

Ibec Slams Proposals By The Low Pay Commission
Ibec has slammed plans by the Low Pay Commission for a 50c increase in the national minimum wage. The group, which represents Irish business, said the case is at odds with all the economic evidence. It also said the increase would heap pressure on companies still struggling to stay in business.

IFA To Protest Outside Dublin Castle
The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) President John Bryan said that farmers would be protesting outside Dublin Castle today to coincide with the visit of EU Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos. It is to highlight the damaging effects of his CAP reform proposals on productive agriculture in Ireland.

IFA Slams Closure Of Subsidy Applications
Up to 50% of the income of many drystock farmers "will be wiped out", a major farmers' union has claimed today. Irish Farmers Association President Padraig Walshe described the Government's latest decision to close the "REPS 4" subsidy scheme for new applicants as a "devastating blow for up to 34,000 farmers".
