Ombudsman Given Powers To Investigate NCSE Issues
Fine Gael TD for Wicklow, Simon Harris, has today welcomed the announcement that the Ombudsman for Children will be able to investigate issues that parents of children with special needs have with the National Council for Special Education by the end of this month.
Deputy Harris has been avidly campaigning for this matter to be resolved since being elected in 2011.
Mr Harris said: "I am delighted at today’s announcement that the Ombudsman for Children will finally be able to investigate issues that parents of children with special needs have with State agencies. This matter was one of the first issues I raised in the Dáil when the Government took office two years ago and I have been avidly campaigning for this anomaly to be rectified, as well as drafting legislation to this effect.
"Children with special needs face many challenges as they go about their daily lives. Up until now, if an issue arose with a State agency in relation to children’s special educational needs, the Ombudsman did not have the power to investigate. This was an unsustainable and unjust situation as parents had no opportunity to have these matters investigated."
