Avon Ladies Loss Their Trade

More than 5,000 ‘Avon Ladies’ in Ireland have lost their trade following a sudden announcement on Monday that the US firm behind the brand "ceased trading in the Republic of Ireland" with immediate effect.

In Ireland Avon employed 10 full-time staff, known as "employee associates", and another 5,000 people acted as "active representatives" for the company.

Those 5,000 sales staff range from people working a few hours a week to supplement their income, to those who work full time.

All of the sales staff are considered self-employed agents and so are not entitled to any severance payment such as redundancy,

Worldwide, Avon said it will cut 400 staff in an effort to save up to $50m (€38.4m) a year, however Ireland is so far the only country the business has pulled out of.
