New Laws Agreed To Regulate Clamping Industry

The Cabinet has agreed to a set of proposals to change the laws regulating Irelands clamping industry.

Under the new laws there would be a cap on how much motorists are charged for the release of their vehicles clamped on private lands.

A Dáil committee recommendation that clamping on hospital grounds be banned is not to be introduced however.

Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar will published the Bill on Friday, saying they new regulations would eliminate rogue operators.

Previously there had been no legislation covering clamping on private property, such as hospitals, colleges, clubs and apartment blocks, where release fees could average between €80-€120.

The new laws should come into force later this year.
