Government Agree €21 Deal With World Food Programme

A €21m, three-year strategic partnership has been agreed between the government and the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the world's largest humanitarian agency.

The agreement was signed on Monday by Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney and Junior Trade Minister Joe Costello alongside the WFP's executive director Ertharin Cousin during the Hunger-Nutrition-Climate Justice conference at Dublin Castle.

Commenting on the agreement Mr Coveney said: "Given our history, hunger and famine are issues which resonate strongly with Irish people and I am proud that notwithstanding the recent downturn in our economy, we have been able to maintain our core contribution to the WFP at the same level in recent years."
