Senior Garda Association Calls For End Of Recruitment Embargo

An embargo on garda recruitment should be lifted, the Association of Garda Superintendents has said, who say the strength of the force is at a critically low level.

The association, which represents senior garda officers said there are also more than 20 vacancies for superintendents all over the country that need to be filled.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan are due to address the association this afternoon, when it holds its annual conference in Naas in Co Kildare.

The General Secretary of the association says more gardaí must be recruited to sustain the current stability level of 13,000 in the force, which the commissioner says is the minimum needed to operate a police service in Ireland.
