Significant Rise In Science And Tech Course Applications

The last five years have seen a seen a significant increase in the number of application to study science, technology and engineering at third level.

The Higher Education Authority, which analysed CAO preferences, also found that technology courses make up one fifth of all first preference applications this year.

The figures show:

• First preference applications for engineering and science - at 4.6% and 7.5% respectively - both up on last year.

• Applications for computer courses have stabilised at 6.6%.

• Technology courses now constitute one third of all Level 6 & 7 first preference applications.

• Engineering and science applications have increased to 10% and 11.2% respectively.

CAO College Offers First Round Placements
The Central Applications Office has published the first round of applications for Leaving Certificate students seeking places in third level education. The figures reveal a drop in the points required and around 80% of students have been offered one of their first three preference placements.
