Dail Spending Watchdog To Investigation €290,000 Chairman Office Refurb
A €290,000 refurbishment of the office of the Daíl’s spending watching, it to be investigated by his own department.
It follows revelations by the Irish Independent of the extent of lavish spending for the work on the office of Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness when he was Junior Minister for Trade in the previous Government in 2007.
It is understood the work included a specification that only luxury toilet roll could be used in the en suite bathroom for the office.
At the Public Accounts committee, Mr McGuiness agreed to set up an investigation into the spending, saying, "I have nothing to hide and I want the whole thing investigated."
Mr McGuinnness insisted that the refurbishment of his office was carried out by the Office of Public Works with no imput from him.
"At no stage did I have any involvement in designing or asking for particular furniture or whatever. If I had known it was going to cost that money, I would have stopped it," he said.

Appeal For All-Ireland Economic Solution
As today's North-South summit got underway in Dublin, the Stormont Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has appealed for the NI Executive to act collectively "to meet the challenges being posed by the current economic situation". He said that the public spending cuts being proposed by the British government are a major island-wide challenge.

Three Released Following Post Office Robbery
Three men arrested in connection of a post office robbery in Roscommon have been released without charge. Two masked men, one believed to be armed, entered the premises at around 9.30am on Tuesday in Strokestown. They threatened staff and made off with an undisclosed sum of cash. A file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Callely's Return Slammed As Suspension 'Stands'
Fine Gael has slammed the return of controversial Senator Ivor Callely, who has retaken his seat in the Seanad following a 20 day suspension. Senator Eugene Regan said that Mr Callely's return was not in compliance with the "Ethics in Public Office Act 1995" as Mr Callely had not yet "regularised" his affairs.

The cost of housing has replaced the cost of food as the biggest household expense. The average cost of housing has risen to €147.73 per week, compared with €94.57 per week in 2004/05. During the same period spending on food fell from €142 per week to €131.28.
