Prendergast Slams Direct Provision System

Tying in with a scheduled national day of action highlighting the inhumanity of the direct provision system for asylum seekers, Phil Prendergast MEP has called on Ireland to improve the inhumanity of the system.

She said: "I fully support this national day of action to highlight the abuses inherent in the direct provision system. No matter where a person comes from, basic human dignity is a right and Ireland must no longer deprive asylum seekers of that right.

"Seeking asylum is a means to find protection, solace and relief. The direct provision system facilitates fear, neglect and cruelty. We cannot let that continue.

"I am calling on Minister Shatter to commit to the 2003 EU Directive laying down minimum standards for the reception of asylum seekers. It is a blatant disregard for human dignity that Ireland remains outside the scope of that directive."
