Man Pleads Not Guilty To Theft Of 136 Kegs Of Beer

A 53-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to the theft of 136 kegs of beer.

Patrick Devoy of Church View, Church Street, Finglas appeared at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to face a charge of using a fake cheque to pay for beer worth €23,120 on December 6, 2011.

It is understood that Mr Devoy went to the offices of Diageo, on James Street, Dublin, saying he was collecting an order of kegs for the Belfry pub in Smithfield.

Mr Devoy handed over a cheque for €23,120 for an order of 75 kegs of Guinness, 11 kegs of Smithwicks, 25 kegs of Budweiser and 25 of Carlsberg lager, to be collected from Shannon Transport Logistics, Ballymount, a sub contractor which handled the distribution of kegs for Diageo.

The order wasn’t considered unusual due to the date, it being just ahead of Christmas.

It wasn’t until a Diageo sales rep pointed out that the Belfry bar had been closed since 2011 that the cheque was discovered to be fake.

The court also heard how later the same day a second man arrived in with the same type of cheque that Mr Devoy had presented and said he was also collecting beer for the Belfry pub. The man was intoxicated and Martina O'Donavan, a payments administrator at Diageo Ireland, called security.
