Irish Autism Survey Welcomed
Labour TD for Cork South-West, Michael McCarthy, has said a new survey which examines the prevalence of autism in Ireland will contribute to a greater awareness of the condition here.
Deputy McCarthy, who pioneered the landmark Autism Bill last month, said: "This survey is the latest in a series of important developments in this very important area.
"The survey, which was commissioned by Irish Autism Action and is the first of its kind in the country, has established that for every person diagnosed with autism in Ireland, five people are affected. That means that around 300,000 people in Ireland are affected directly or indirectly by the condition.
"This information is of critical importance as we continue to explore the issues surrounding autism in Ireland. Establishing the prevalence of the condition will help us to determine how many people with autism need access to services in the future."
