Cash Welfare Payments To Be Phased Out
By 2017 virtually all state social welfare payments will be made electronically.
It is understood that currently some 800,000 welfare recipients do not have a bank account are receive cash payment, with the Irish Independent reporting that in January 2012 more than half of all welfare payments were made this way.
The government have announced that cash payment will be phased out by 2017.
According to the Irish Independent, by 2017 it is expected that three quarters of all payments will be made directly into bank accounts, with the remainder being done electronically onto a pre-paid card of mobile phone.
However, critics have said this issue for the so-called ‘unbanked’ recipients is not about the ability to get a bank account, but access to cash.

Social Welfare Payments Delayed
A "once off processing issue" will cause a one day delay in social welfare payments, the Department of Social Protection has announced. The social welfare payments are made electronically directly into the recipients bank account, but almost 33,000 will have until tomorrow to receive a payment due today.
