35 Staff Left Unemployed After Fire Destroys Factory
35 people have been made redundant after a fire destroyed a pet food plant at Clonmellon on the Westmeath-Meath border.
Staff at the Pet Treats plant have been temporarily laid off due to the extensive damage caused at the 18,000sq ft plant at the weekend.
It took seven fire engines to tackle the blaze, which started in the early hours of Friday morning.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
According to the RTÉ the company’s managing director Ged O’Leary said “strenuous efforts” would be made to salvage the company, which hopes to establish a new premises nearby within the next few weeks.

Kilkenny Store Damaged In Fire
Fire crews are still at the scene of a fire which broke out at a pet food store beside an animal foods plant in Co Kilkenny in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Fire crews were called to Connolly's Red Mills animal foods plant in Goresbridge around 2am, The blaze was brought under control by 5am. No-one was injured.

Mountjoy Prison Cell Fire
A fire broke out in a cell at Dublin's Mountjoy Prison on Thursday night, according to reports. It is understood that a prisoner had set fire to a cell. However, it is believed that prison staff and fire crews were able to contain the fire quickly. No-one was injured in the incident.

Dublin Fire Brigade has revealed it responded to 1,100 emergency calls during Halloween night. On what is normally the service's busiest night of the year, there were also reports of attacks on fire crews while Dublin Bus was forced to withdraw its service in part of the city.

Call For Govt To Introduce Animal Welfare In Primary Schools
The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) is calling on the Government to introduce an Animal Welfare and Responsible Pet Ownership module into the primary school curriculum to reduce cases of cruelty and neglect involving animals. A similar model was introduced in many Educate Together schools over two years ago.
