Report Shows Fall In Average Farming Income
The average income of the farming sector fell 15% in 2012, with earnings now averaging at €25,483, new figures from the Teagasc National Farm Survey show.
The figure highlight that farming is still reliant on direct support payments, which can be up to 81% of a farms income.
In 2012 the average direct payment per farm was €20,534.
Considered the most important component of direct payments, the Single Farm Payment is currently being negotiated in the ongoing Common Agricultural Policy talks.
"The €25,483 is the average income for the full population of approximately 80,000 farms and this conceals the large variation that exists across the different farming enterprises,” Brian Moran of Teagasc said.
