Virus Outbreak Closes Off Disability Unit

An outbreak of an 'influenza-like' virus has closed a hospital unit for disabled people to new admissions and a restriction for visitors, the Irish Independent have reported.

The human metapneumovirus (hMPV) has broken out in St Joseph’s Disability Service, part of St Ita’s Psychiatric Hospital campus in Portrane, north Dublin.

The contagious virus is spread via coughing, sneezing and contact with respiratory secretions.

The Irish Independent reported that an HSE spokesperson said tests confirmed the virus was the cause of a respiratory illness affecting 11 of the unit’s residents.
