Little Island Pfizer Plant To Close

US pharmaceutical company Pfizer is to close its manufacturing plant at Little Island in Cork, blaming falling demand for key products.

According to the Irish Time the company will move Little Island production to nearby Ringaskiddy early next year.

136 people are currently employed at the Little Island plant, with over 3,000 people employed by Pfizer across Ireland.

The company said today that none of its other Irish sites are affected by the consolidation of its active ingredient manufacturing operations.

Investigations Launched Into Workplace Death In Cork
Investigations have been launched into the death of a 35-year-old man in a workplace accident in Co Cork. It is understood that an incident occurred at around 1.30am at Architectural & Metal Systems, an aluminium manufacturing plant, in Little Island. Garda and the Health and Safety Authority have launched separate investigations into the incident.

Cork Man Killed In Pharmaceutical Plant Explosion
A man has died following an explosion at a chemical and pharmaceutical plant in Co Cork. Three other men were also injured in the blast at the Cordon PharmaChem factory in Little Island. One of the men is understood to be in a serious condition. An investigation is now underway into the cause of the explosion, which happened at around 1.

Employees Go Back To Work Following Protest
Workers have gone back to work after holding a protest outside the Great Island power station in County Wexford. Over 60 employees took part in the protest over the possibility that some of them would be replaced by a Spanish scaffolding contractor. However, an agreement was made in a meeting yesterday and the workers returned this morning.

Met Éireann Confirms Wettest August Since 1997
Rainfall was below average along western and northern coasts and in parts of the East, with the percentage of average values ranging from 73% at Newport to 225% at Johnstown Castle, its wettest August since 1997, according to data from Met Éireann.
