Food Advertising Banned During Children's TV

The advertising of foods high in fat, salt and sugar is to be ban from television during children's TV programming, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has ruled.

Alongside this, restrictions on the volume of advertising will be introduced after 18:00, with ads for these food types being restricted to not more than 20% of the TV advertising time.

Cheese is the only food group to avoid the restriction, following lobbying, however, the product advert will have to contain an on-screen message.

The BAI said that while cheese is high in fat, other health benefits of the food were considered.

The restrictions will come into force from September 02.
