State Exam Fee Exemptions Rises
The number of Leaving and Junior Certificate students whose exam fees have been waived has increased significantly, RTÉ have reported.
A fee of more than €100 is meant to be paid by those sitting State exams, with exceptions made for families experiencing financial hardship. Alongside this, any pupil whose family has a full medical card does not have to pay.
According to RTÉ, the number of Leaving Cert students who fell into this category between 2008 and 2012, rose by 60% – from 11,000 in 2008 to almost 18,000 last year.
A similar rise has been noted in Junior Cert students, with 27% exempt from the fee in 2008 and almost 40% in 2012.

Dublin Drugs Dealer Jailed For 18 Years
A Dublin man has today been jailed for 18 years after transporting €6.4 million worth of heroin in his van. Michael Byrne, 36, of Old Tower, Clondalkin, was found guilty by a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of possessing 32 kilograms of heroin in the Culmore Road area of Palmerstown on January 15th, 2008 following a six-day trial last month.

Patrons Barred From Late Night Drinking
The new laws putting restrictions on the sale and availability of alcohol came into force on Tuesday. The Intoxicating Liquor Act 2008 means off-licences will now close at 10pm, and will give new powers to gardaí.

Kilkenny College To Drop School Fees
Kilkenny College, one of the country’s oldest schools, has announced they will stop charging fees and enter the free public education system from the beginning of term in September. The impact of falling incomes and rising taxes on families are being attributed for the school’s decision.

Cost Of TV Licence Jumps
From this January, the cost of a television licence is to go up by €2. Even before next month's 2008 Budget is revealed, news has emerged that from January 1, 2008 a TV licence will cost €160. It is estimated that this will increase licence revenues to RTÉ by about €2.8m.
