ICI Raise Concerns Over Increase In Racist Incidents

The Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI) has raised concerns over the increase in racist graffiti and posters appearing in Dublin.

The ICI raised the issue after the graffiti attack on the building site of the proposed headquarters of the Anglo Irish Bank.

The council said it had received reports of eight racist incidents in a single day, while confirming that is has been holding discussions with the Garda ethnic liaison office.

Ireland Racist?
There was a third more racially motivated incidents last year in the Republic. According to figures released ahead of anti-racism week attacks rose by 33% on 2006. The incidents included in a report by the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism have been forwarded either directly by victims or people representing them.

Africa Article May Spark Investigation
The Garda is to be asked to investigate if an article on the plight of Africa breaches Ireland's laws on incitement to hatred. The Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI) are planning an official complaint to Garda about the publication of what it considers to be a racially offensive article in The Irish Independent, last Thursday.
