Couple Fined For Not Registering Home Schooled Children
A couple have been fined €2,000 after being found guilty of failing to send two of their children to school.
Eddie O'Neill and Monica O'Connor, of Tullow, Co Carlow, have home schooled all of their six children. But were prosecuted after the refused to register two of their children with the National Educational Welfare Board, which allows parents and guardians to home educate their children.
Noting that the couple had educated their children at home for the last 24 years, a judge noted that the State maintained the right to "decide whether the children were getting a minimum education".
