ASA Receive Complaints Over 'Crime Scene' Advert

The Advertising Standards Authority received over 20 complaints over an advertising campaign run by the Irish Examiner.

The ads highlight an upcoming crime investigation feature, with one billboard showing King John's Castle and the River Shannon, crossed with crime scene tape, the warning, "Do not enter", and posing the question: "Just how safe is Limerick?"

According to the Irish Independent some 20 written complaints were received within 24 hours, and the authority is reviewing further complaints.

It is understood that Irish Examiner editor Tim Vaughan declined to apologies for the anger caused by the advert and said that readers would be "surprised" by the series, which could rebuke the stereotypes of certain cities, because crime levels in Limerick had declined in recent years.
