Smuggled Tobacco Found In Tea Bag Shipment

A quarter tonne of tobacco has been uncovered hidden inside a consignment of tea bags, customs offices have said.

A van was intercepted by customs officials in the north of Dublin city, with the haul, estimated to have a retail value of €102,000, was discovered.

The ‘roll-your-own’ tobacco represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of €72,000.

One man was questioned about the seizure but was later released, pending a review of the file by the DPP.

Illegal Cigarettes Uncovered In Co Tipperary
Some €21,000 worth of illegal cigarettes have been recovered by the Revenue Customs Service. The haul was uncovered at two premises in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, on Thursday night and represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of some €18,000. A number of people were questioned in connection with the find and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Cash & 65,000 Cigarettes Seized In Cork
A revenue operation in Cork has resulted in over 65,000 unstamped cigarettes being taken out of circulation and €1,350 cash seized. The intelligence led operation was carried out in a residential part of the city on Thursday 15 August. A man was later questioned as a result.

Tobacco Free Ireland Report Published
The Minister for Health Simon Harris has welcomed the publication of the 2015 Annual Report on the Tobacco Free Ireland Action Plan. Tobacco Free Ireland was launched under the Healthy Ireland framework in 2013 and sets a target for Ireland to be tobacco free (that is, with a smoking prevalence rate of less than 5%) by the year 2025.

HSE Commit To Make All Workplaces And Campuses Tobacco Free
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has said that it is committed to making all of its workplaces and campuses tobacco free. The HSE made the commitment as it announced that its Kells Primary Care Centre in Kells, Co Meath, is now a "Tobacco Free Campus".
